In its development in 1960 the field of periodontia was included in the field of oral surgery. Then in 1962 stood alone and separated from oral surgery. In 1979, the association of Indonesian periodontia enthusiasts (IPPERI) was founded. Then in 1984 IPPERI was changed to the Indonesian Periodontist Association (IPERI) because many of its members already have dentists who specialize in periodontics. Based on a mandate from PDGI, in 2000 IPERI formed the Indonesian Periodontal Collegium which later became a representative of the expertise to sit on the Indonesian Dental Council (MKGI). In 2005, the Indonesian Periodontal Collegium was formally formed and ratified at the PDGI Congress in Makassar. Finally, in 2012 the periodontics study program at Hasanuddin University Makassar was officially opened in accordance with the decree SK DIKTI No. 333/E/O/2012 tentang Pembukaan Program Studi Periodonsia di Universitas Hasanuddin, Makassar.
