Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist Program

This is an advanced program for Dentist specifically in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). It is the first and the only one OMFS study program in eastern part Indonesia. This postgraduate program is intended for general dentists who wish to continue their education in the field of OMFS.

The duration of education is 4 years or 8 semesters. In the first year, residents will learn basic theory and in the following year they will do clinical work at the Unhas Dental Hospital or at a satellite hospital.

Recognized as a grade “B” based on Indonesian Accreditation Agency For Higher Education In Health (IAAHEH/LAM-PTKes) with decree 0472/LAM- PTKes/Akr/Spe/VI/2022 valid until April 29th 2026. (https://lamptkes.org/).

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist Dental Education Study Program, Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University (PPDGS BM FKG UH), is the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery education to be established outside of Java and is the only education specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Eastern Region Indonesia. PPDGS BM FKG UH was established on August 14 2018 with the sincere intention to advance and disseminate dental and oral health services, especially in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia.

PPDGS BM UH is also the first BM study program in Indonesia to use an 8-semester curriculum design based on the Higher Education Curriculum with learning strategies consisting of group discussions, self-directed learning, cooperative and collaborative learning, problem-based learning (PBL) and inquiry, case study and case report, skill lab and scientific session.

PPDGS BM FKG UH has complete educational facilities, e-learning facilities (SIKOLA), Clinical Skill laboratory (CSL) facilities, has quality human resources that meet the educational standards of a study program, has a Dental and Oral Education Hospital as the Main Teaching Hospital which is Plenary accredited from the Hospital Accreditation Commission and accredited as a Teaching Hospital by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as network hospitals namely the Hasanuddin University Teaching Hospital, as well as several regional hospitals, and the Unhas Hospital Dental Center.

Through the main mission of “Making a reliable, highly competitive, and able to master and apply science and technology based on the Indonesian maritime continent”, we are confident and believe that this study program will be an excellent and center education with quality outcomes that are competitive and highly absorbent in Indonesia.

The opening of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist Study Program was carried out to adjust to the times and the needs of society. This is stated in the Strategic Plan of the Faculty of Dentistry UNHAS (FKG UNHAS Strategic Plan) 2016 – 2020 namely in 2016 it will be proposed to open five new Study Programs consisting of Masters, Doctoral Study Programs, Dental Specialist Education Program for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (PPDGS BM) , Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry Study Program.

This effort is the answer offered by FKG UNHAS to create human resources who can develop technology and innovate in various fields which are the basic needs of the community, especially the Eastern Indonesia Region (KTI) which does not yet have the Study Program in question.

The opening of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Study Program was marked by a Decree of the Association of Indonesian Health Higher Education Independent Accreditation Institutions (Association of LAM-PTKes) Number: 00003/LAM-PTKes/Akr PSB.PTN- BH/Spe/VII/2018 and Decree of the Chancellor of Hasanuddin University regarding the opening FKG-UNHAS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Study Program on August 14 2018, No.N3364/UN4.1/KEP/2018

Visions

The vision of this programme is to become a reliable and highly competitive education program as well as able to master and apply science and technology based on the Indonesian maritime continent to be apply in global aspect.

Mission

To achieve the vision, the department formulates the following missions:
1. Become an education center that produces professional graduates who can bring benefits as well as fulfilling the oral maxillofacial Surgery Specialist needs not only in Indonesia but also in international world
2. Become a center for research development, create patents in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery that focus on the development of maritime continental resources (research and patents on the exploration of resources in the form of algae into printing and analgetic materials)
3. To create an interdisciplinary collaboration in research and patent development cross-faculties; build partnerships with international institutions and organizations to facilitate knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and a better understanding of global health aspects
4. Implementing a quality education and teaching system and being able to contribute to scientific activities at the national and international scope; We will equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare system, including the social, economic, and political factors that influence access and quality of care
5. Conducting research on the role of the development of science and technology in maritime continental resources, especially in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery field; We will encourage students and faculty members to engage in medical research relevant to oral and maxillofacial surgery
6. Carry out community service in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; integrate relevant content addressing the community health needs into our educational program. Engage students in hands-on learning experiences within the community, ensuring that they understand their roles and responsibilities in addressing current public health issue

Aims:

The program aims to produce highly skilled and competent graduates in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, who takes part in community health needs, healthcare system needs, social accountability through community services, as well as medical research and global health aspect. Through this vision, we aim for graduates of our educational program to become Care Provider; Lecturer/Researcher; Communicator; Community leader; Manager; Creator and Innovator; and to be a Decision Maker.
